In what local officials called one of the biggest job-creating announcements in recent years, Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Xerox Corp. said the company will develop a call center in Webster that will provide about 500 positions.

Before Thursday, Xerox had said that its Webster campus was under consideration for the call center but that it also was considering other locations.

“Xerox is a global leader that could have gone anywhere in the world to expand their business, but they chose New York because our state is rapidly becoming the place to be for businesses,” Cuomo said.

“It’s one of the biggest moves in recent years in new jobs,” said Mark Peterson, CEO of Greater Rochester Enterprise, the economic development organization. He said Xerox, which has 6,300 local employees, is “a smart company” that chose to invest in the Rochester area because it was aware of the quality of the workforce.

“This is a big deal for us,” Peterson said.

The center will be in Building 200 on the Webster campus. Xerox said it will purchase information technology systems and equipment to create a 23,000-square-foot facility to provide support for its services clients.

Renovations are to begin in February and be completed by October. Hiring will begin in March.

Carl Langsenkamp, a Xerox spokesman, said the company operates call centers in 12 states and has been providing call-center operations for 20 years. The company employs more than 34,000 agents in 150 call centers around the world and handles more than 1 million calls a day in 20 languages.

“We looked at a number of options,” Langsenkamp said. “Some of the incentives the state talked about, coupled with the quality of workers we already know about in Monroe County, made this an attractive offer.”

As you may be aware, over the weekend, we offered a $100 instant-savings promotion through both our consumer and commercial channels. Despite the very short runway, we were pleased with customer response and, as a result, have made the decision to implement a $100 price drop on the U.S. list price of the HP TouchPad, enabling both HP and our channel partners to be even more price competitive in the marketplace. Effective immediately, the HP TouchPad 16GB Wi-Fi will now be available for $399.99 and the HP TouchPad 32GB Wi-Fi will now be available for $499.99.
